UK banks (many of which are majority owned by the sucker known as the UK taxpayer) are laughing at customers again after a Supreme Court ruling declared the banks are not at fault for the way they charge for 'unauthorized' overdrafts.
The banks currently make about 2.5 billion from these fees.
Here is what happens in many cases. A customer may set up a direct debit to pay a bill monthly. Since the banks cannot be certain about when the direct debit is taken (they always give a range of dates) in some months it might be taken before the customer's salary is paid in. Instead of refusing to pay it due to lack of funds, the bank take it upon itself to pay the direct debit which takes the customer account overdrawn. Once the account goes overdrawn, the bank pile on the charges, mercilessly.
I have spoken to NatWest management staff and they have no clear idea why this is the case. Essentially, they say "It's our policy, nay our right, to fuck you lowly customer, so do not get in our way as we do it please."
I hope this is overturned by a European Court.
