In the Classification of Economies that is based on such criteria as region and income, Bulgaria is considered to be a lower medium income country that is under Europe and Central Asia. This Classification was made by the World Bank in 2005.

The country’s economy has been known for its fast developing and thriving in the last years and also for its sustainable growth. The average growth rate amounted to 5% in the period 2000-2004, which was preconditioned by the improved macro economic policies and deep structural reforms carried out by the government.

The territory of Bulgaria covers 111.0 thousand square kilometers, as of 2003.

The population of the country makes up 7.8 millions, as of 2004, that is to be compared to 8.1 millions in 2000. The population growth rate amounts to -0.6 percent in 2004 while it was -1.8% in 2000.

The life expectancy rate in Bulgaria is estimated as 72.1 years, as of 2003.

In the same year, the infant mortality rate per one thousand births made up 12.3.

The Gross National Income of Bulgaria (Atlas Method) amounted to 21.3 billions in 2004. The same figure per capita in the same year equaled 2740.0.

The Gross Domestic Product was 24.1 billions in 2004.

The GDP growth rate per year reached 5.6 percent in the year 2004 compared to 5.5 percent during 2004—2008.
