Christmas Island is situated approximately 135 sq. km. south of Indonesia. It is washed by the Indian Ocean. The population of the island is more than 1400 people. The economy of the country depends mainly on phosphate mining and tourism. The island belongs to Australia and is governed by the Australian Attorney-General’s department located in Canberra.
The major sector of the island’s economy till 1987 had been phosphate mining. After this year it was phased out, however, by the Australian government. Then in 1991 this industry was brought back. During the period from 1993 to 1998 there had been working a US casino that was supported by the Australian government. Starting with 2001 there has been carried out the construction of a commercial space launching site.
The economy of the island is also dependent to a large degree on tourism. The island has a 140 km coastline and provides beautiful beaches for those who love traveling.
The only type of goods the country exports is phosphate. As far as imports are concerned, it is usually consumer goods. The major partners of the country are Australia and New Zealand.
